The snow is falling and the once clean driveway or walkway is now blanketed in several inches of snow. Not a big deal so you head back to watch your favorite Netflix show. Several hours later you look outside and you now have almost a foot or more of snow! This is where most homeowners throw in the white towel and either hire a professional or strap on the old boots. Living in the North East and Sullivan Catskills snow removal is a common chore for any business or home owner. However many underestimate the snow and that can lead to a dangerous situation. Here are a few tips to help keep you and the family safe during the winter months when it comes to snow removal.
Keep up with the storm. Netflix can be very tempting during a snow storm but taking time to shovel the snow as it comes down every few hours is much better then waiting until the storm is complete.
Push the snow don't lift. It is easy to want to pick up the snow and send it flying. However pushing the snow to the edge of the driveway or walkway is a much better option. Your back will thank you later.
Dress comfortable. Wearing breathable fabric, flexible clothing and jackets is important. Range of motion can be limited if you do not dress properly and can lead to injury.
Wear GOOD boots. I have learned many times that old worn out boots can be a hazard. Many times homeowners will slip and fall due to worn out boot treads. Also older boots can leak and cause feet to freeze before the job is done!
Stay Hydrated. It is easy to forget how much water we lose through sweat when moving snow until we are back inside taking off our jackets. Make sure you drink a tall glass of water before and after snow removal.
Know your limits. If you start to feel fatigued, weak, dizzy, or uncomfortable you should stop immediately. Take breaks often especially during heavy wet snow storms. Make sure a family member or friend is home if possible while removing snow. If all else fails hiring a professional may be worth the costs.
I hope these tips will help you during this winter season and keep you safe. As always respect the snow but also enjoy it when the work is done!
